Malaprop's Upcoming Events at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Cafe AUGUST 3 - 6, 2006 Thursday, August 3 at 7pm: David Deida, author of The Way of the Superior Man offers an evening of lively discussion. Deida, who has also written Dear Lover and Finding God Through Sex, is highly regarded for his exploration of spiritual intimacy in relationships. Deida will sign books after the discussion. We expect this to be a big event, so come early to get a good seat. This event is free and open to the public. For those interested in a more intensive discussion with extensive audience participation, Deida will speak at Jubilee on Friday, August 4 from 7-10pm in a “Unique and Unpredictable Evening.” Tickets to the Jubilee event are $50. Tickets are available through us or at the door. Friday, August 4 at 7pm: J. R. Moehringer will read from his memoir, The Tender Bar. Moehringer, who won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2000, describes his fatherless youth and the companionship he found among the Dickensian characters at a neighborhood bar. Maureen Corrigan of NPR calls this book, “A fierce and funny coming of age story about ambition and yearning and necessary betrayals. Moehringer’s mom pushed him to make something of himself, to go to Yale and eventually get hired and fired by the New York Times, [and he] exquisitely describes every wince-making step of his class climb. A superb literary brew.” The Tender Bar was named a “Best Book of the Year” by The New York Times, Esquire, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Entertainment Weekly, USA today, NPR Fresh Air, and New York magazine. Our customers rave about this book! Writers and fans of great memoirs, don’t miss this event! Saturday, August 5 at 7pm: Luke Salisbury will read from his novel, Hollywood and Sunset. Thomas Doherty writes of this book, “Like D.W. Griffith, the pioneering auteur whose Intolerance (1916) provides the shooting stage Hollywood and Sunset, Luke Salsibury conjures a wondrous pageant of intricate design and rare beauty. With a gimlet eye for cinematic detail, a sure grasp of narrative drive, and a grand sense of epic sweep, he takes the reader on a spellbinding excursion through the back lots of embryonic Hollywood—and into the heart of a man who is himself caught at the crossroads of myth and history, starry-eyed romance and harsh reality.” Tracy Kidder praises the work as, “a rare thing—a truly entertaining novel with soul.” Sunday, August 6 at 2pm: Kim Edwards will read from her new novel, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter.. This novel begins on a winter night in 1964, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the daughter has Down’s syndrome. For motives he tells himself are good, he asks the nurse to take the baby away to an institution. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens next...Memory Keeper’s Daughter continues to be a HUGE, number one, bestseller for us and around the country, mostly through word of mouth recommendations. Jodi Picoult writes, “Kim Edwards has created a tale of regret and redemption...of characters haunted by their past. Crafted with language so lovely you have to reread the passages just to be captivated all over again...simply a beautiful book.” BELE CHERE RELIEF: Bele Chere is revving up outside and the temperature is already near 90 degrees at 11am. But it is quiet in here, and a good refuge from the madness. Stop in while you’re walking around the fair and get everyone’s favorite summer drink, the Mocha Brain Freeze. It’ll pick you up, believe me! Enjoy your weekend! dta6malapropsaug36bb1
