EDMAR CASTENADA: 'A MOST ORIGINAL MUSICIAN'
Jazz harpist Castenada captivates crowd last Sunday
Last concert of WNC Jazz Society's season on Oct. 25
*THE EDMAR CASTENADA QUARTET featured singer Andrea Tierra to a near sell-out crowd at Diana Wortham Theatre on Sunday evening, Sept. 13, 2009 | It was easy to hear why youthful Colombian harpist Edmar Castaneda was voted the #1 Rising Star for Miscellaneous Instrument in the 2009 Downbeat magazine critics' poll. His music was original and fast-paced, ranging from ethereal to earthy to humorous. Now based in New York City, Edmar and company pleased the Asheville crowd. "A jazz harpist of imposing talent," wrote the NY Times. They were right. At times Edmar almost seemed to crawl into the strings and become one with his harp. The group's last number of the evening, harp juxtaposed to saxophone accented by drums was improv at its best, a spirited musical conversation between magnificently played instruments. It brought the appreciative crowd to its feet with yelps and applause. | To give a listen at EdmarCastenada.com, Click Here> | For more details about Edmar Castenada -- as well as news about the WNC Jazz Society's 2009 season closer on Oct. 25 featuring Gina Sicilia and Dave Gross Blues Band -- visit WNCjazzsociety.org or Click Here>
