Asheville Committee for Citizens with Disabilities' 2006 Award Winners 2006 Award Winners of Asheville Committee for Citizens with Disabilities On October 5, 2006, Mayor Terry Bellamy and the Mayor's Committee for Citizens with Disabilities announced this year's recipients of Mayor's Committee awards in five categories. The committee presented the awards, based on nominations from the community, during a reception at the Doubletree Hotel Biltmore. The following individuals, businesses and organizations were honored for their awareness and actions that help create accessibility and inclusion for people of all ages and abilities: * Educators of the Year: Michael Anderson (Occupational Course of Study) and Carol Ray (Progressive Education Program), both at T.C. Roberson High School * Excellence in Housing: Mountain Home Care, which provides services that allow people to remain in their homes * Excellence in Recreation: VA Medical Center Volunteer Services Program, which creates expanded access to recreation for veterans with disabilities * Business of the Year: Burger King at Arden Plaza, whose record of equitable hiring and commitment to training reflect values of inclusion and promote quality of life * Excellence in Leadership: Ann Hensley (individual) and A-B Tech Compensatory Education Program (organization), for work and vision that have significantly benefited the lives of persons with disabilities. In addition, the committee presented certificates of appreciation to Mountain Mobility and Asheville Transit for their efforts toward more accessible transportation. The Asheville Mayor's Committee for Citizens with Disabilities was formed in 2004. The committee promotes and advocates for equal and inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities in all aspects of society, and recognizes people and organizations that contribute to this cause. Members the Asheville Mayor's Committee for Citizens with Disabilities includes dedicated private citizens, representatives from service organizations, such as Western Alliance, F.I.R.S.T., and NC Vocational Rehabilitation Services, as well as community organizations, such as the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce.
