Politics of Asheville ASHEVILLE ON THE LEFT ASHEVILLE IN THE MIDDLE At the local level, there remains a debate about the overall political leaning of several of the Asheville City Council members. Even U.S. Representative U.S. Representative Heath Shuler, who whipped long-time lightning rod of conservatism and controversy, Charles Taylor, tends to try to stay somewhat in the middle as evidenced by his active participation as a Blue Dog Democrat. Of course, many would take issue with that assessment. The most vocal of all conservative politicians in local politics is unquestionably Carl Mumpower, Asheville City Council member who is running for higher office. Mumpower is running a high-profile campaign as the Republican candidate for the 11th U.S. Congressional District against incumbent Democrat Heath Shuler of Haywood County.
