Preservation Society ![]() 2008 Griffin Winners Accept Preservation Awards, Coman Receives 2008 Sondley Award *PRESERVATION SOCIETY Presents Griffin Awards | Last night, Tues., May 20, 2008, The Preservation Society of Asheville & Buncombe County presented its annual Griffin awards for local preservation efforts. Noteworthy was a special "stewardship" award presented to Asheville Design Center for outstanding design work on an alternative I-26/I-40 connector that would conserve the fabric of Downtown Asheville, as well as use considerably less acreage, far less asphalt, halve the number of bridges needed, and convert the Patton Avenue bridge for local use only. The lovely gathering and presentation at The Princess Anne Hotel, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was attended by approximately 75 people, including Buncombe building ordinance official Jim Coman, Public Interest Projects' Harry Weiss, Asheville Board of Realtors' David West, WCQS founding member Jim Cavener, and Albert Realty's Clayton Ludeman. As an aside, Clayton and Geraldine Ludeman's downtown condo will be on the Asheville Art Museum's Urban Loft & Art Tour on May 29, 2008. ![]() Jim Coman (left), recipient of the 2008 Sondley Award, is applauded by an enthusiastic audience attending the Preservation Society's annual Griffin awards ceremony. 2008 SONDLEY AWARD Jim Coman (left) received the prestigous Sondley Award for 2008. The Sondley Award is presented annually by the Historic Resources Commission of Asheville and Buncombe County to an individual or individuals in the community "who by word or deed has kindled among the citizenry of Asheville and Buncombe County an appreciation for the history or historic resources of the area." The award's name honors Forester Alexander Sondley, author of Buncombe County's most complete history. Dr. Sondley was born in South Carolina in 1857. He spent his later childhood and his adult life in his mother's native Buncombe County. Educated at Col. Stephen Lee's academy in Chunns Cove and later at Wofford College, Sondley was a prominent local attorney, bibliophile, and a scholar of state-wide reputation. He was awarded two honorary doctorates during his lifetime. In 1927 Sondley was elected official Historian of Buncombe County by the Buncombe County Board of Education. He wrote a two-volume history of Buncombe County, which was published in 1930 and remains the area's definitive historical treatise. Upon his death in 1931, his last will and testament included the donation of his extensive library to the City of Asheville and it became the nucleus of Pack Library's North Carolina collection. 2008 GRIFFIN AWARDS For a complete list, Click Here> |
