Asheville PARC E-Newsletter June 23, 2008
STOP PARKSIDE!
Please join us at the County Commission meeting tomorrow- Tuesday, June 24th, 4 pm, in the Court House (2nd floor).
THE PARKSIDE CONUNDRUM
The County Commissioners and City Council each say that the other could solve the problem.
They are both right.
The Commissioners created this problem when they sold a piece of Pack Square to Stewart Coleman, a developer. He plans to build a condo in front of City Hall where the big magnolia tree is now.
Commissioners did this without telling City Council or the public.
What now? Well,
1. The Commissioners say they didn’t know they were selling parkland, so they could go to court to void the sale.
2. The City could join the suit that the Pack heirs have filed to void the sale (since the County had no right to sell the land).
3. The Commissioners or City Council could take the property by eminent domain. That’s what eminent domain is for - to take property for a public use and to pay market value for it. It’s the law, it’s fair, and it solves the problem.
Which Commissioner or City Council member will be the one to make the motion? Who will second it?
Who will stand up to this developer and act in the public interest?
Who will vote to bequeath a beautiful park to our kids, instead of another millionaires' condo?
Please email your elected officials now, and tell them you expect them to re-claim this park space.
Tell them -- You Sold Our Land. We Want It Back. It's Your Responsibility.
