The one-hour event, from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., will be held at the Diana Wortham Theatre, 2 South Pack Square, located on Biltmore Avenue across from the Vance Monument in the heart of Downtown Asheville. News Analysis by Byron Belzak Publisher-Editor, DowntownAsheville.com Posted July 23, 2008 Will Parkside developer Stewart Coleman construct a "spite house … a flamboyant symbol of defiance,” with no windows, only concrete, on two sides of his eight-story Parkside condominium? It’s a possibility, however remote, a well-known developer recently told DowntownAsheville.com. If Parkside was built as Coleman recently threatened to do by moving his building as close as he could to the property line abutting City-County Plaza and the turnaround in front of city hall, his high-rise condo would have no windows on two sides, as required by building and fire code. That is, one windowless monolith of concrete would face Asheville’s central park on one side. The other windowless side of Parkside would face city hall on the other. Only the remaining two sides facing Marjorie and N. Spruce streets would be allowed to have windows by code. Not a pretty prospect. Some scoff at the idea, and say it’s arm-bending tactics by Coleman to try and get what he wants. Others do not take it so lightly. There's still time to plan now on whether to attend Bele Chere or leave town, as many Ashevillians do to avoid the crush of the crowd. Others fully embrace the largest party of the year and gladly pay for entertainment, while most choose the free music venues instead. Enjoy (or escape) its 30th year. Click Here> ![]() Johnny Millwater: Gets the Job Done 2008 Chuckle Crew Gets the Gold! And They Will Be Back Next Year (Maybe Sooner) This past week's 2nd Annual "Laugh Your Asheville Off" festival featured 21 standup comedians and they, by all accounts, nailed it. Promoters of the event, which included workshops for aspiring comics, told DowntownAsheville.com that they are thrilled with the response from a town that loves to read, actually thinks, speaks up when necessary and -- when given the chance -- laughs at what needs laughing at. Half of the funny men and funny women in this year's laugh fest are based in Asheville. TRIVIA QUESTION: How many professional comedians does it take to keep Americans laughing? The common wisdom number is 10,000 nationwide, according to Johnny Millwater, the festival's "clean-up" headliner. This year's big-name headliner was Alonzo Bodden. Give it up for Asheville's chuckle crew. Melanie Maloy has it going on, and will no doubt be going places. And kudos by the case to Greg Brown of Asheville, who founded, manages, and participates in the freshest act in town.
