The Asheville City Council reviewed over 40 applications. | For Miller's official application, Click Here> | Scrutiny Hooligans called Miller's appointment a "surprise outcome" and predicts that he will represent the interests of the tourism sector of the economy given his position as executive vice president of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce. The Scandal Continues

Scrutiny Hooligans: 'Defiant Coleman Moves Ahead on Parkside' (or Why Gordon Smith Should Have Been Chosen as City Council Member)
*GORDON SMITH TAKES UP THE TORCH AGAIN to stop Parkside, but loses his bid to be appointed as the new council member | There were a lot of good applicants for the vacant City Council position -- and congratulations to the newly appointed Kelly Miller. However, Scrutiny Hooligan's founder Gordon Smith would have rounded out the perspective of city council better with his grassroots, common sense, "people first" approach. (And kudos to Brownie Newman, who was the only council member to put Smith on his initial short list.) Here's why Gordon Smith would have made the better choice. He has proven over the years that he cares about people and Asheville. He tells it like it is, publicly, without mincing words, yet without undo rancor. Smith's most shining example of shouldering the people's interests first was (and is) his ahead-of-the-crowd, outstanding, continuing coverage of the proposed Parkside high-rise condominiums, Asheville's greatest public-private partnership of scandal. This Parkside community embarrassment is beyond the pale. This Stewart Coleman-orchestrated, privately owned high-rise condo, if erected, would mar the public view of Asheville's most beautiful art deco building and one of its greatest tourist attractions (not to mention the pinnacle of this icon emblazened on the city logo): Asheville City Hall. This Parkside hot potato was served up by the former Buncombe County Commissioners and remains dumped in the lap of the current Asheville City Council, who have been less than proactive, waiting for Buncombe to deal with the mess. Maybe Kelly Miller will grab the hot potato and be able to cajole the Buncombe County commissioners and his fellow council members into doing what's not only right, but needed, to put the Parkside condundrum to R.I.P. The Buncombe Commissioners, under the questionable stewardship of county manager Wanda Green and without proper notification to Asheville City Council, sold Pack Square parkland to born-and-raised Ashevillian Stewart Coleman, perhaps Asheville's most unfavorite son. No doubt, Miller knows Coleman is the builder/developer of the 21 Battery Park condos and son of the developer who built the Asheville Mall. Maybe Miller can convince him to do the right thing for everyone's sake, and to make others, who have a long history with mountain heritage, proud. Maybe Miller will be the standup guy that Smith would have been as council member. That is, many Asheville area citizens believe, including Gordon Smith, who first blew the whistle long and loud about the Parkside debacle, that more transparency in government and doing the right thing, especially concerning Parkside, are needed now. Maybe Miller will be Mr. Transparency. As Gordon Smith put it in his application to be selected as city council member: "Good government makes lives better. I'd like to be able to steer our city towards greater sustainability, defuse the emotionally charged debate over development, and help Asheville's citizens understand how government affects their everyday lives in important ways." Such inspiring words give one hope of a better future for Asheville. We can only hope that Kelly Miller has equally high principles and rules with the "people first" foremost in his mind. While Miller will no doubt have a propensity to represent the interests of his employer, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, the power of his fresh voice to end the Parkside problem -- and fight to prevent other future structures and ill-fated initiatives from diminishing the quality of life for all -- will be a most welcomed addition to city council. And, of course, when he feels the need, he can call Gordon Smith from time to time to get an unadulterated "people first" point of view. Smith's phone number is listed on his city council application. And if the phone is busy, maybe Miller will take the time to leave a message. And, maybe, in time, Miller will leave a legacy in which ALL Ashevillians can be proud, not just the chosen and visiting few. Here's looking at you, Mr. Miller -- and Mr. Smith. -Byron Belzak / Mediabear | For Gordon Smith's article about recent Parkside poop, visit ScrutinyHooligans.us or Click Here> | For Gordon Smith's city council application, Click Here> | For Kelly Miller's official city council application, Click Here>

BLOGGERS CLARE HANRAHAN AND GORDON SMITH: Hanrahan (left) and Smith (right) helped to force the local media to accurately report the Parkside scandal, which was the likely reason for the political demise of former Buncombe County chairman Nathan Ramsey. Ramsey recently lost to local attorney David Gannt, who admitted that selling parkland to developer Stewart Coleman was a bad idea. Said Gannt: "We screwed up." * Photo: Belzak/Mediabear

The Dec. 4 reception of his current show, entitled “Faces You Might Know,” was well attended and dazzled. It is head and shoulders above so many others. It speaks loudly and softly, depending on his subject. It tantalizes and inspires. It makes one glad to be alive while examining what it is to be human. “Faces You Might Know” –- some of which are well-known Ashevillians who attended his reception -- celebrates the genre of portraiture. More importantly, “Faces” celebrates the diversity and power of the human spirit as only Vadim Bora can capture, articulate and amplify. The keen observer knows that Bora’s many “Faces” will surely grow legs and travel worldwide. Savor this tour de force of emotion and passion before it leaves town. –Byron Belzak / Mediabear | For details about the exhibition and gallery, Click Here>
