City Downtown Master Plan

Downtown Master Plan Lead Consultant David Dixon Co-authors Urban Design Book
Davis Dixon of Goody Clancy, who has been a central figure in researching and writing Asheville's new downtown master plan, announced that he has co-authored a new book, entitled "Urban Design for an Urban Century: Placemaking for People."  John Wiley & Sons recently released the $80 book that was co-authored by David Dixon, FAIA; Lance Jay Brown, FAIA, and the late Oliver Gillham, AIA. Dixon is a principal of Goody Clancy, which is based in Boston and will present the final draft of Asheville's master plan to Asheville City Council in March 2009. Wiley said that the authors hope the new book will encourage a wide range of readers to think about urban design in new ways. The book forwards the notion that the discipline of urban design is a powerful tool to adapt and enhance communities across America given the confluence of economic, environmental, social and cultural changes. Please Attend! FINAL Public Meeting

DRAFT MASTER PLAN PRESENTATION
Thursday, January 15, 2008
7:00 - 9:00 PM
Asheville Civic Center

The much awaited draft plan for the Downtown Master Plan will be presented to the public on January 15. The consultants will present a summary of the plan, and there will be time for questions and answers.

Attendees will also hear about the mediation process that occurred this fall that involved specific issues such as height, financing, design review and other issues. This will be an important night - don't miss it!

After this meeting, there will be a three week comment period during which citizens can submit comments on the draft plan to the consultants. The final plan is scheduled to come before City Council in March.

ABOUT THE EXTENDED PLAN

The e-newsletter explained the reason for the master plan's extended schedule:

Master Plan Schedule Extended

A series of public meetings to gather citizen input for the plan have already been conducted. The last meeting was held on September 15. A public meeting was scheduled to review the draft plan on September 18; however, the Advisory Committee agreed to delay this meeting to ensure that the draft was of high quality and balanced in content and solutions.

The Advisory Committee appointed a sub-committee to meet with a local mediator/facilitator to see if there were areas of agreement. The subcommittee met six times and reported the outcomes to the Advisory Committee and the consultants. The consultants have taken these comments along with all the public comments from the numerous public meetings and will finish the draft by early January.
