First Lady Visits Connemara, Announces $50,000 Grant for Children's Program

*Laura Bush's July 28 Trip Served to Highlight National Park Foundation Grant.

*Standing outdoors at the podium on the park's little stage, Mrs. Bush officially announced the $50,000 National Park Foundation Grant in front of approximately 100 invited guests, park volunteers and credentialed press.

*The grant will bolster the Carl Sandburg Home's Junior
Ranger children's program. The First Lady is the honorary chairman of the National Park Foundation.

A number of national and local dignitaries along with park officials,
 attended the July 28 event at Carl Sandburg's home.

*In the audience and publicly acknowleged by the First Lady was Nikol Shuler, the wife of U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC).

Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) accompanied the First Lady during her entire visit to Connemara, which included petting the goats with the children, touring the Sandburg house, and attending the presentation that announced the $50,000 National Parks Foundation grant to the Junior Ranger program at the Carl Sandburg Home Historic Site in Flat Rock, NC.

*The small group of invited guests were entertained outdoors by a theatrical troupe associated with the Flat Rock Playhouse, North Carolina's state theatre.

*Connemara Historic Site Was Closed to Public During the First Lady's Afternoon Visit. From 1 to 5 p.m. on Mon., July 28, during the First Lady's private, visit the entire Carl Sandburg National Historic Site, including all trails on the property, were closed and off limits to the public.
