Artful News of the Season…

This summer and fall, more than ever, classes, camps and ad hoc instruction for art-minded youngsters, oldsters and middle-agers abound everywhere in Asheville.

At Woolworth Walk, Bill Churlik teaches silversmithing, and Lorelle Bacon gives painting and drawing classes.

Asheville Arts Center on Merrimon Avenue offers “unlimited opportunities for students to explore their interests in music, dance and drama.”

Ann Dunn ’s Fletcher School of Dance on Patton Avenue promotes ballet and subscribes to the philosophy “that young people should study a variety of types of dance, whether their aim is to acquire an appreciation for the art form, to become a professional in any single discipline, or simply to enjoy themselves."

For those who want to learn how to float across a ballroom floor, there are two good choices, both north and south of center city: Blueridge Ballroom School of Social Dance on Weaverville Highway and Asheville Ballroom and Dance Centre on Sweeten Creek Road.

And there is more classical instruction of a quieter kind at The Art Atelier, which is located on Depot Street. This art school allows people of all ages and skill levels to “participate in a classical art program that enables each individual to master basic skills in pencil, pen and ink, watercolor and oil.”

And at Beads and Beyond on Wall Street, there is now a four-person table for some spontaneous group beading. At another newly installed area within the store that recently was remodeled in a warehouse style with discount pricing for the professional and hobbyist, one can now receive individual training as well, said owner Barry Olen.

Don’t wait. Create. Do something beautiful this summer and fall.
